Coffee Table Size Guide: Matching Height, Length and Shape to Your Sofa

Coffee table positioned in front of a sofa at the correct height and distance

A coffee table is the piece most often bought on looks alone, and the piece whose dimensions matter most to how a living room actually functions.

Too tall and it fights the sofa. Too long and the room loses its walking route. Too far away and nobody can reach a drink without standing.

All three are settled by two measurements you already have: your sofa’s seat height and its length.

Height: Match It to the Sofa Seat

The single rule that matters most: a coffee table should sit level with the sofa seat, or up to four inches below it. Never above.

Your sofa seat heightCoffee table heightWhy
16″14–16″Low-profile modern sofas need a low table
18″ (most common)16–18″The standard pairing
20″17–20″Traditional and high-leg sofas
22″ (firm or orthopaedic)18–22″Check the table is not lost below the seat line

A table taller than the seat forces you to reach upward and makes the sofa look sunken. It is the most common proportional mistake in a living room, and it is instantly visible once you know to look for it.

Length: Two-Thirds of the Sofa

Aim for a table between half and two-thirds of your sofa’s length. Below half it looks undersized; beyond two-thirds it starts to crowd the seating.

Sofa lengthCoffee table lengthTypical shape that works
Loveseat, 60″30–40″Round or small rectangle
Standard sofa, 84″42–56″Rectangle — the classic pairing
Large sofa, 96″48–64″Rectangle or oval
Sectional, 120″+Two smaller tables, or a large squareSquare or paired ottomans

Sectionals are the exception worth noting. A single rectangular table rarely works against an L-shape — two smaller tables, or one large square, serve both runs of seating far better.

Standard coffee tables run 42 to 52 inches long and 18 to 24 inches deep, which covers most standard sofas comfortably.

Clearances Around It

GapDistanceWhat happens if you get it wrong
Sofa front to table edge14–18″Under 14″ you catch your shins standing up
Table to TV stand or fireplace24–30″Below this the walking route disappears
Table to armchair14–18″Same reach and legroom logic as the sofa
Main walkway around the group30–36″People start turning sideways to pass

Sixteen inches is the sweet spot from sofa to table. Close enough to set a cup down without leaning, far enough to walk between them sideways.

Our guide to measuring a room before buying a sofa covers those walkway figures in more detail, including the diagonal-depth check for getting furniture through the door.

Choosing a Shape

ShapeBest forTrade-off
RectangularStandard sofas; narrow roomsCorners are a hazard in tight walkways
RoundSmall rooms; homes with young childrenLess usable surface for the footprint
OvalRectangular capacity with softer traffic flowFewer designs available
SquareSectionals and square seating groupsAwkward against a long straight sofa
Nesting tablesFlexible spaces; small apartmentsLess surface when stacked together
Upholstered ottomanDoubles as seating; safest with toddlersNeeds a tray for drinks

Round tables earn their place in two situations: rooms too small to lose a walking line to sharp corners, and homes where a toddler is at exactly head-height with the table edge.

Glass, Wood, Metal or Stone

MaterialStrengthsDrawbacks
Tempered glassVisually disappears, so a small room feels larger; wipes clean instantlyShows every fingerprint; edges need care
Solid woodWarmest look; scratches can be sanded outWater rings mark unsealed finishes
Veneer over engineered boardStable in humidity; wide style rangeDamage cannot be sanded back
Metal frameSlim profile; very durableCan feel cold and industrial alone
Marble or stoneSubstantial and hard-wearingHeavy; porous and stains from wine and oil

A note on tempered glass

Furniture glass should always be tempered rather than annealed. Tempered glass is heat-treated so that if it does fail it crumbles into blunt granules instead of long shards.

Independent testing bodies such as UL Solutions certify products against exactly this kind of safety standard. If a glass-topped table carries no indication of tempering, ask before buying — particularly for a household with children.

Glass tops also suit small rooms unusually well. Because you see the floor and rug through them, they occupy visual space far less heavily than a solid wooden top of identical size.

Don’t Forget End Tables

End tables follow their own rule: match the height to the sofa arm, within an inch or two either way.

  • Most sofa arms sit 22 to 26 inches high — buy an end table in that range
  • Depth should roughly match the sofa’s depth so it does not project awkwardly
  • A table with a drawer earns its place beside the seat people use most
  • In small rooms, a C-shaped side table slides over the sofa arm and takes no floor space
  • Lamps on end tables should put the shade bottom near seated eye level

Coffee table and end tables do not have to match, and increasingly do not. Keeping one material in common — the same metal finish, or the same wood tone — is enough to make them read as deliberate.

Frequently Asked Questions

How tall should a coffee table be?

Level with your sofa seat or up to four inches lower. For a standard 18-inch seat height, that means a table of 16 to 18 inches. Never taller than the seat.

How far should a coffee table be from the sofa?

Between 14 and 18 inches, with 16 inches the usual sweet spot. Closer and you catch your shins; further and you have to lean forward to reach anything.

What size coffee table for an 84-inch sofa?

Between 42 and 56 inches long — half to two-thirds of the sofa length. That lands squarely in the standard 42 to 52 inch range most tables are made in.

Are glass coffee tables safe with children?

Tempered glass is designed to crumble rather than shard, which makes it considerably safer than ordinary glass. Many parents still prefer a rounded ottoman or a soft-edged wooden table while children are very small.

Should end tables match the coffee table?

Not necessarily. Sharing one element — a metal finish, a wood tone, a shape language — is enough to tie them together while keeping the room from looking like a showroom set.
