Ottomans and benches are the most useful furniture in a room and the least considered. They are footrest, extra seat, coffee table, storage and — occasionally — the thing everyone trips over.
Which of those they end up being comes down almost entirely to height and placement.
Here is how to size an ottoman to your sofa, a bench to your bed, and where each should sit.
Ottoman Height: One Inch Below the Sofa
The governing rule is simple. An ottoman used as a footrest should sit level with your sofa seat or about an inch below it.

Most ottomans fall between 13 and 20 inches, with living room models clustering at 15 to 18. Too high and your legs angle upward uncomfortably; too low and your heels dangle off the front edge.
For width, aim for roughly two-thirds of the sofa’s seating area. A tiny ottoman in front of a large sofa looks stranded, and only one person can use it.

Benches at the Foot of the Bed
A bed-end bench should sit two to three inches below the top of the mattress, and be narrower than the bed.

A bench that matches the bed width exactly looks like part of the frame rather than a separate piece. Two-thirds to three-quarters is the proportion that reads correctly.

Using an Ottoman as a Coffee Table
- Buy a solid tray at the same time — a soft top will not hold a mug
- Choose a firm, flat top rather than a deeply buttoned one
- Performance fabric or leather; this surface will get spilled on
- Leave the usual 14–18 inches between it and the sofa
- A storage version needs clearance above to open the lid
- Check the lid is hinged or lifts cleanly, and that it stays open on its own
The tray is not optional. It is what turns an ottoman into a usable surface, and buying it later usually means buying the wrong size.
Entryway Benches
The hardest-working bench in most homes is the one by the front door, and it has different requirements from the rest.

Ottomans are low, often dark, and frequently sit in the middle of a walking route. That combination is exactly what causes falls at home.
- Keep them out of the main path between doorways
- Avoid low, dark poufs in a room with poor evening lighting
- If it moves around, choose one heavy enough to stay where it is put
- In a household with anyone unsteady on their feet, favour a bench against a wall over a free-floating ottoman
- Never leave a moved ottoman in a hallway overnight
