When to Buy Furniture: A Month-by-Month Sale Calendar

Furniture showroom floor where seasonal stock changes drive discounts

Furniture pricing follows a predictable annual rhythm, driven by when manufacturers release new collections and when showrooms need the floor space back.

Knowing that rhythm is worth real money on a large purchase — and knowing when not to wait is worth just as much.

Here is how the year works, and how to get a better price whatever month it is.

Why the Calendar Exists

New furniture collections typically ship twice a year — around February and again in late summer. Showrooms have to clear the outgoing lines to make room.

That is the whole mechanism. Every genuinely deep furniture discount traces back to a store needing floor space rather than to a marketing calendar.

PeriodWhat is happeningTypical saving
January–FebruaryClearing last year’s lines before new collections landDeepest of the year on indoor furniture
Presidents’ DayMajor promotional event, mattresses especiallySubstantial
Memorial DayBest selection of outdoor furnitureModerate
JulyClearing summer floor models before autumn stockSecond-deepest for indoor
August–OctoberOutdoor furniture clearance as the season endsDeepest on patio
Labor DayMajor event across most categoriesSubstantial
Black Friday / post-ChristmasBroad promotional pricingSubstantial, but selection thins fast

The pattern worth remembering: buy indoor furniture in January or July, and outdoor furniture in the autumn. Everything else is a variation on those two windows.

Selection Versus Price

These two move in opposite directions, and choosing between them is the real decision.

Autumn patio clearance is the clearest example. The savings are genuine, but you are buying furniture you will not sit on for six months and will have to store — our outdoor furniture guide covers overwintering.

Floor Models and Discontinued Lines

These are discounted year-round and are the most reliable saving available at any time of year.

AdvantagesTrade-offs
Floor modelDeep discount; take it home today; you can inspect the exact pieceMinor wear; no choice of finish; usually final sale
Discontinued lineSubstantial discount on new, unused stockCannot order matching pieces later

The discontinued-line caveat matters most on bedroom and dining sets. If you may want a matching nightstand or two more chairs in a year, a discontinued line makes that impossible.

Inspect a floor model in daylight and check the underside and back, which take the most handling. Our delivery guide covers the inspection points worth checking before you sign for anything.

Getting a Better Price Any Time of Year

  • Ask about the floor model of anything you like — the answer is often yes
  • Mention you can take it today. Clearing floor space now is worth something to a store
  • Buy the room, not the piece. Multi-item purchases give a salesperson more room to move
  • Ask what is being discontinued rather than what is on sale
  • Ask about delivery and removal separately — those are often easier to discount than the item
  • Shop near the end of the month, when targets concentrate minds

The most effective question is not “is this on sale?” but “what do you need to move?” Those are different questions and they get different answers.

Reading a sale price honestly

Not every advertised discount represents a real saving, and a few checks separate the genuine from the theatrical.

  • Compare the actual price against the same or a comparable model elsewhere, not against the “was” figure
  • A permanent sale is not a sale — if a piece has been reduced for months, that is the price
  • Check what the discount excludes: delivery, assembly, protection plans and old-furniture removal are often separate
  • Percentage-off claims on a set can hide a low discount on the pieces you actually want
  • Ask whether the sale price still allows a floor-model or multi-item reduction on top

The last point is the most useful. Promotional pricing and floor-model pricing are frequently separate mechanisms, and asking whether they combine costs nothing.

Spreading the cost is a separate decision from timing it. Our guide to buying furniture with no credit in Virginia sets out the total cost of each payment route, and MyMoney.gov, the federal financial literacy resource, covers planning a major purchase generally.

When Not to Wait

Timing advice is easy to over-apply. There are situations where waiting for January costs more than it saves.

  • You are sleeping badly on a failed mattress. Months of poor sleep is not worth a seasonal discount
  • You have nowhere to sit or eat. Furnishing a new home is not a discretionary purchase
  • The piece is discontinued. It will not be cheaper later; it will be gone
  • A floor model you want is already reduced. Somebody else will take it
  • You need it for a specific date — lead times on special orders can run to weeks

Mattresses deserve particular mention. If yours is sagging, the cost of waiting is measured in sleep rather than dollars — our guide to mattress construction and lifespan covers the signs that replacement is overdue.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best month to buy furniture?

January and February for indoor furniture, as stores clear last year’s lines before new collections arrive. July is the second-best window, ahead of the autumn stock changeover.

When is patio furniture cheapest?

August through October, once the season ends. Memorial Day gives the best selection but not the best price — the trade-off is storing it over winter before you use it.

Are floor models worth buying?

Often, yes. You get a deep discount and can inspect the exact piece rather than trusting a photograph. Expect minor wear, no choice of finish, and usually a final-sale condition.

Can you negotiate furniture prices?

More often than people assume, particularly on floor models, discontinued lines and multi-room purchases. Asking what the store needs to move is more productive than asking for a discount outright.

Should I wait for a sale to replace a mattress?

Not if you are sleeping badly. Mattress promotions run several times a year, but months of poor sleep costs more than the difference. Buy when you need it and ask what is currently reduced.
